The Michigan football program has undergone changes in recent seasons, with a culture shift at the forefront. Former five-star quarterback commit JJ McCarthy arrived in Ann Arbor in 2021 and assumed a significant role as a freshman before becoming Michigan’s QB1 last fall. Blake Corum, a prominent player for the Wolverines, recently shared his thoughts on what makes McCarthy so exceptional.

McCarthy started as the Wolverines’ quarterback in Week 2 of the 2022 season following an impressive debut against Hawaii. From that point onwards, it became evident that Michigan football had something extraordinary with the quarterback. He led the team to 12 consecutive victories, including significant wins over Penn State, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Purdue in the Big Ten title game.

Corum attributes McCarthy’s standout performances to his unparalleled work ethic, much like that of several other outstanding players for the Maize and Blue over the past few seasons. “We see a guy that works not only in the facility but outside the facility. He’s a great leader in the facility and a great leader in life. Just having a good dude and great quarterback really helps the team,” says Corum.

Corum emphasized the importance of the culture shift and the impact it has had on the team’s success. “We built it to the point where people know how to work. We have high expectations here now, and guys know if there is any BS, we’re going to call you out. The culture is stronger than ever,” he says.

As the Wolverines aim to guide Michigan football towards a third consecutive Big Ten title, keep an eye out for Blake Corum and JJ McCarthy. With hopes of potentially contending for the program’s first national title since 1997, it will be an exciting season the entire team strives to achieve their goals and make a mark in college football.
